Noteworthy films released in 2023.

In 2023, Malaysian cinema continued to show upward growth with 54 films being released in that year alone. Although far from pre-pandemic level, the growth covers not only ticket sales of popular films such as the franchise “Polis Evo 3” (which ended its run with ticket sales of RM54 million), but also with smaller budget film like Imaginur (which was expected to only reach RM1 million but ending up with RM6 million collection) to success in streaming platforms with Nenek Bongkok Tiga (Viu) and Budak Flat (Amazon Prime). Below are selected Malaysian films (released in 2023) available to stream on Netflix and other streaming platforms.

● 『La Luna』

Directed by a Singaporean Malay, M Raihan offers a unique look into the now extinct village Kampong Bras Basah, where in certain parts of this region, conservative values are placed above other principles including individual rights. What makes this film stand out among other similarly themed films, it is told as a whimsical comedy where it parodies the current political situation of a small, insignificant issue such  as a woman’s bra could cause an entire village to question their entire existence. Showcasing tradition versus modernity has never been this fun.
This comedy film features an ensemble cast of the best young and veteran actors, from Malaysia’s Wan Hanafisu, Sharifah Amani, Shaheizy Sam, Nam Ron to Singapore’s Hisyam Hamid.

● 『Tiger Stripes』

In the unique body-horror genre category, directed by Amanda Nell Eu, the film shows the difficulty young girls face when they menstruate for the first time in an Asian society. The main character’s world, played by the talented Zafreen Zairizal, is turned upside down overnight as the people around start to treat her differently – mostly in negative manner – and this struggle is shown symbolically as she turns into a weretiger and start causing havoc at her all-girls religious school. Despite being a horror film, Amanda discusses the idea of individuality and the courage to express one’s power and freedom instead of staying hidden in shame and fear. A co-production of 8 countries, this film is considered a critical success story as it won many film festival awards including the coveted Cannes Film Festival’s Critics’ Week Grand Prize, a first for a Malaysian film.

● 『Abang Adik［

Directed by Jin Ong and shot mainly around Pasar Pudu, a wet market area in the middle of old Kuala Lumpur where immigrants and the poor live, the film portrays the strong bond between deaf and mute Abang (Wu Kang-Ren) and the reckless Adik (Jack Tan) trying to live life to the fullest despite being undocumented, without any official identification from the government. But does a paper define a person? Though both are orphans and not related by blood, they care for each other unlike the authorities who must look at a piece of paper to judge whether a person is worthy to be taken care of. These same forgotten people of the old city, such as transgenders prostitutes, took care of the beggars, squatters with unconditional love for each other. A heart-warming example of Malaysian love.

● 『MALBATT: Misi Bakara』

Another action film by Adrian Teh, this time as an adaptation of the 1993’s Black Hawk Down incident in Mogadishu, Somalia where the brave 19^th Mechanized Royal Malay Soldier Regiment (RAMD), part of the Malaysian Battalion (MALBATT) launched a daring rescue of American soldiers trapped in the heart of enemy territory. Feeling the actions of the real MALBATT was understated in the Hollywood adaptation, the team set out to show the Malaysian side who played a very important role in liberating the American soldiers and costing a Malaysian soldier’s life.  Featuring a lineup of famous actors such as Bront Palarae, Shaheizy Sam, Zahiril Adzim and many more, the film was one of the biggest box-office films of 2023.

● 『Pendatang』

● 『Hungry Ghost Diner [

The directorial debut of We Jun Cho, the film depicts the two things Malaysians love the most; food and ghost story. Chef Bonnie (played by Chen Keat Yoke) returns to her hometown in Behrang only to be haunted by ghosts of her dead relatives returning for the Hungry Ghost Festival forcing her to find joy for life again. Mainly shot in the small town in Perak, the film is a case study of how Malaysian Chinese have grown their own sets of customs and traditions, separate from mainland China including their own definition of success and spirituality. As Bonnie tries to help revive her father’s small café, she finds meaning behind her destiny to be a chef which is to help the departed souls to move on to the realm beyond.
