The relationship between Malaysia and Japan is a long one, from a stormy beginning to decades of mutual respect and understanding. Many generations of Malaysians grew up watching Japanese drama, listening to Japanese music, reading Japanese manga. I am one of them, when I came to study in Waseda University at Tokyo almost 10 years ago I felt as if I have returned to my second home. And inevitably I love Japan as much as I have loved Malaysia.I have made films in both Malaysia and Japan, because the stories of the people from both countries continue to fascinate me. And I hope this can help us understand each other more. I congratulate these two countries of my heart for the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, and hope for a fruitful relationship for many decades to come.
マレーシアと日本の関係は長いものです。嵐のように始まり、その後数十年にわたりお互いに尊重、理解し合ってきました。マレーシア人は世代に関わらず、日本のドラマを見て、日本の音楽を聞いて、日本の漫画を読んで育ってきました。私もその一人です。10年以上前、東京の早稲田大学に留学生としてやってきた時、なんだか第二の故郷にきたような気がしました。私はマレーシアを愛しているのと同じぐらい日本を愛しています。私がこれまでマレーシアと日本の両方で映画を撮ってきたのは、どちらの国の人々のストーリーも私を魅了し続けるからです。私の作品が相互理解の一助になれることを願っています。私にとって大切な両国が外交関係樹立60周年を迎えたことに、お祝い申しあげます。そして、今後も実り多い関係が続くことを願っています。

It’s been 60 years of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Japan. This seed planted 60 years ago have now grown into a big beautiful tree that birds nested on, that other animals and insects fed on, that people sit, chat, dance, sing or even fall in love under. It is beautiful. So, let’s hope this big tree continue to live on. cheers.
マレーシアと日本が外交関係を樹立してから60年が経ちました。60年前に植えられた種は大きな美しい木となり、鳥たちが巣を作り、動物や昆虫はお腹を満たし、人々は木陰に座ったり、おしゃべりしたり、踊ったり、歌ったり、ときには恋に落ちています。素晴らしいことです。この大きな木がこれからも生き続けることを共に願いましょう。おめでとうございます。

Congratulations to WAU on its third anniversary of publication this year! WAU has done a commendable job in promoting Malaysian arts, culture and heritage to the Japanese peoples. This is in line with some of the objectives in the Establishment of Malaysia-Japan Diplomatic Relations, which also celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. One of the collaborations between Japan and Malaysia is in the field of films – and WAU has been right in the forefront in documenting them. Like the Malaysian wau (giant kites) of Malaysia, WAU will continue to soar high in promoting friendship, goodwill and unity between Japan and Malaysia.
WAU創刊三周年おめでとうございます！WAUは、マレーシアの文化、アート、伝統芸能を日本の読者に紹介するために大きな役割を果たしてきました。これは今年60周年を迎えた日本とマレーシアの外交関係の目的にも合致したものだと思います。映画業界でも日マ間でコラボレーションがなされてきましたが、WAUは最前線でその様子を伝えてきてくれました。日マ両国が友好を深め、結びつきを強めるため、マレーの大型凧「ワウ」のように、これからもWAUは高く飛翔することでしょう。
